“Then they said to one another, “We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news. If we are silent and wait until the morning light, punishment will overtake us. Now therefore come; let us go and tell the king’s household.””
2 Kings 7:9
In 2 Kings 7, we are brought face to face with a horrible reality – the city of Samaria is besieged by an enemy, and God’s people are in such dire conditions that some are eating their own children to stay alive. Within that heart-wrenching scene, four lepers decide to surrender to the enemy, reasoning that they may have a small chance of survival. However, they find an enemy camp that has been entirely deserted of the enemy by God’s sovereign power – and now all that remains is the food, the clothing, the silver and the gold of the enemy! After plundering several tents, the lepers say to one another, “We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news. If we are silent and wait until the morning light, punishment will overtake us. Now therefore come; let us go and tell the king’s household.”
These lepers knew that a whole city was dying because the people did not know about the feast that God had miraculously provided, and these lepers knew that they had an obligation to share this incredibly good news!! Brothers and sisters, we have been given far greater news than these lepers! We have learned of a far superior feast – the marriage supper of the Lamb and His bride, the Church, which is for all those who put their hope and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation!
There is a world that is dying around us, unaware of the feast provided! But this is the day of good news! This is the day of grace! We have an obligation to share this good news with all those whom we come into contact with, in our neighbourhoods, in our schools, and in our workplaces. Superstition may have played a part in motivating these lepers; but it must be love for our Saviour and love for the lost that motivates us to take this glorious good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ across the street and around the world!
