The Pilgrim’s Path – May 8, 2022

“Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all’.” Proverbs 31:28, 29
On December 6, 2005 my five brothers and I had the unenviable task of carrying to the grave, the casket that held the body of the woman who gave each of us life! She was a remarkable woman who blessed all those she came in contact with, and I truly thank God that He ordained that special lady to be my mother. My oldest brother, in delivering her eulogy, included these words: “I don’t think her name will probably be written about in books, but I think that where it really counts, her name is among the “who’s who” in the kingdom of God!”
Most of us live our lives in the mundane. For the most part, our names will not be known among the elite of society, or recorded in books for future generations to read about. But in the rather mundane, regular rhythm of life, God is at work. And one of his greatest means of building His kingdom is the often sacrificial, selfless love of a mother for her children. As Mothers are changing diapers, feeding toddlers, reading bedtime stories and singing “Jesus Loves Me”, they are nurturing little souls – and there is no greater work in the universe! Society around us may see motherhood as a curse, or at the very least – an impediment on the way to success – however, Scripture presents motherhood as a sacred gift! The world has been deceived into thinking that corporate and financial success brings greater delight than motherhood – but that is a lie from the father of lies!
Only Heaven will reveal the tremendous power of the prayers of Mothers for their children. Only eternity will reveal how great a task and how great an honour were bestowed upon mothers to raise the next generation of citizens, of leaders, of labourers and of presidents. Someone has once well said, “A mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take.” And the late Princess Diana has said, “A mother’s arms are more comforting than anyone else’s.” Today, we take special note of our Mothers, we thank God for each one of you and we wish you all a very Happy Mother’s Day!
