“Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.” Hebrews 2:1
Summer time is a time of vacations, cottage life, enjoying campfires and barbecues with friends, and leisurely strolls through provincial parks. Although we live in a fallen world, there is yet so much beauty all around us, from the panoramic display of wildflowers across a meadow, to the sun glistening on the waters of one of more than 250,000 lakes in Ontario alone! There is a serenity to be found floating along with the slow current in a kayak or a canoe on one of these lakes or on a slow moving river. But beware, the tranquility may also lull you to sleep, and you may gradually drift away from familiar surroundings.
The writer to the Hebrews warns believers to pay close attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. There is a constant propensity in our souls to drift away from the truth. The hymn-writer wrote, “Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love.” Hebrews 1 lays out the glory and majesty of God’s greatest revelation – His own Son! Nothing in all creation compares to the wonder of the Creator! In light of that, we are told: “pay much closer attention… lest we drift away from it.”
As you enjoy the summer season, beware – your enemy wants to lull you to spiritual sleep and cause you to drift away from the truth. Don’t let yourself drift away from Jesus. Don’t look up at the end of the summer, and be stunned at the distance between you and God. Be committed to His Word and prayer on a daily basis, and don’t “neglect to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Praise God for the beauty all around us – but praise Him still more that all of this is but a reflection of the greater beauty found in our Creator!
